Italian Language Course for Children (10-weeks package: 1 Trimester) for ages 5 to 12.
Currently offered as an after-school program at Mays Chapel Elementary during the fall and spring. Summer courses are available at our center upon demand. WE ARE PUTTING TOGETHER A CHILDREN CLASS FOR FALL 2024! Contact us to inquire about current children classes!
Does your child know some Italian from his/her grandparents, parents, or relatives? Does he/she already know one foreign language or would you like to have him develop more bilingual or trilingual skills? This is the place for her/him/them!
This course is the first part of a five-trimester sequence designed to permit him/her to acquire a basic knowledge of the Italian language and culture. The focus of this class will be on real-life language use, both spoken and written. We will address the “Five C’s” of language learning focusing on a student-centered classroom which aims toward proficiency in both written and spoken communication. We will discuss selected cultural aspects of Italy and make frequent comparisons between the cultures of Italy and the United States. Additionally, we foster connections between Italian language and culture and other areas of knowledge. Finally, we seek to create a sense of community of students interested in Italian language and culture in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom.
At the end of ITAL 101 you will have a good foundation on which to continue to build your knowledge of the Italian culture and language. Specifically you should be able to read short texts in Italian, understand and participate in basic conversations, write basic compositions, and understand some important aspects of the Italian culture.
Classes take place on Thursday afternoon from 4:45 to 6 p.m. at Mays Chapel Elementary School through the Dept. of Recreation and Parks. Occasional we offer group courses for children on Saturday afternoon (during the summer). Each lesson will be 1 ½ hour long and will comprise of (A) one hour language and cultural lesson followed by (B) half-hour workshop. Each class will include a different interactive workshop on topics ranging from COOKING LESSONS: (how to make Italian bread, pizza, pasta, cannoli, etc.); how to play famous Italian card/board games, entertaining live music karaoke sing-along performances in Italian, Italian poetry/fables and legends; How to draw famous Italian monuments, how to speak Italian with gestures, Italian history and geography, famous Italian scientists and inventors, AND MUCH MORE!
