So you know very little about Italian language and culture or nothing at all? This is the level for you!
This course is the first part of a two-trimester sequence designed to acquire basic knowledge of the Italian language and culture. The focus of this class will be on real-life language use, both spoken and written. We will address the “Five C’s” of language learning focusing on a student-centered classroom which aims toward proficiency in both written and spoken communication. We will discuss selected cultural aspects of Italy and make frequent comparisons between the cultures of Italy and the United States. Additionally, we foster connections between Italian language and culture and other areas of knowledge. Finally, we seek to create a sense of community of students interested in Italian language and culture in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom.
At the end of ITALIAN 101 you will have a good foundation on which to continue to build your knowledge of the Italian culture and language. Specifically you should be able to
Classes will take place once a week in the evening after work hours. Each lesson will be 1 ½ hours long and will include (A) one hour language and cultural lesson followed by (B) half-hour workshop. There will be 12 lessons in each trimester. Tuition for one trimester (10 lessons) is $250 per student. Each class will include a different interactive workshop on topics ranging from how to make Italian read, pizza, pasta and regional recipes, to how to play famous Italian card/board games, entertaining live music karaoke sing-along performances in Italian, Italian folklore and holidays; how to order at an Italian restaurant, how to speak Italian with gestures, Italian history and geography, famous Italian artists, scientists and inventors, Italian hotspots, etc.
