Prof. Applauso was thrilled to host Antonio Dikele Distefano last night at Morgan State University where he presented and discussed his groundbreaking movie Autumn Beat. Mr. Distefano came a long way from Italy, and he is now on a tour around the U.S. He only made one stop in Maryland and we are grateful that it was in Baltimore. We are very grateful to the Italian Cultural Institute in D.C. for co-sponsoring this event, as well as the Dept. of World Languages, the SWAN, and the Dean's office at MSU. It was inspiring to see Italian 101 and 102 students interacting with the filmmaker, who gave some priceless advice to aspiring screenwriters.

If you are in Baltimore stop by Morgan State University. Prof. Applauso is honored to be involved in this historic Art Exhibition about BLACK ITALY fully funded by the Italian government. The exhibition will be open throughout the month of February until March 31st. It is focused on the recovery of underrepresented and under-narrated fragments of Black history in Italy, both as an invitation towards social healing and as a critique on the exclusion of Black history within Italian culture. Three Italian artists of African descent reconsider what constitutes art within the Italian cultural identity. This is the first time the Recovery Plan project is landing in the U.S. and the first time in history (as far as I know) that an HBCU is hosting such an exhibition from Italy fully funded by the Italian government. I hope you can come and join us for the opening reception on February 23 at 5 p.m. at the JELMA museum. More information about the time and location of the exhibition are in the attached flier.
